5th July "Rossi Day" Laguna Seca 2009

Valentino Rossi was presented today with a proclamation on behalf of Monterey County, declaring 5th July 'Valentino Rossi Day' from now on.



The Mayor of Monterey County, Chuck Dalla Sala, came to the Laguna Seca circuit to present the eight-time World Champion with the honour.

At the same time Ken Lofink, President of SCRAMP (Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula) awarded Rossi the 'key' to the circuit.

Rossi’s teammate Jorge Lorenzo is planning to race this afternoon following yesterday's accident. The 22-year-old has some pain in his shoulder but is receiving as much help as possible from the Clinica Mobile and circuit doctors and is confident of being able to take part at 1400 local time today.

Rossi commented, "I want to thank the people of Monterey and the Laguna Seca track for these great honours! I love racing here and I have enjoyed it ever since we first came in 2005 so I am very proud to have this day named after me. I hope I can put up a good performance this afternoon to thank everyone for this."

Rossi pleased with 20 important points

Extending his World Championship lead to nine points was a satisfactory step for Valentino Rossi at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix.

Valentino Rossi’s MotoGP title defence stayed well on course at Laguna Seca on Sunday even if he was unable to repeat his crucial 2008 victory in California.

Whilst his championship rivals Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner took a battering in qualifying and picked themselves up to finish third and fourth respectively, Rossi had no such troubles and was close to catching surprise winner Dani Pedrosa in the final stages of the race as the Spaniard eased up on the last lap.

Rossi’s second place finish therefore edged him further in front of Stoner and Lorenzo in the standings and he can relax before the next round in Germany simply thinking about how to get the best out of his M1 package as the season continues – whereas his rivals will be nursing various bruises and ailments.

Describing the conclusion of the race Rossi said, “Over the last laps we pushed very hard, me and Jorge, because Jorge wanted to catch me and I wanted to take a small advantage, as the second place was very important. Then on the last lap Dani slowed down a lot so we arrived very fast to Dani, so it looked possible to try and win, but actually I was not quite close enough, it was too risky.”

Analysing the U.S. GP as a whole and looking forward to round nine in a fortnight’s time the Italian star remarked, “This second place is very important for the championship but today we were not at 100% with the bike. We could possibly have made it a bit better. We worked hard but I had some problems at the beginning of the race. Anyway, like I said the 20 points are important, we’ve come here after two great races, so now we take a rest for one week and we will try to be strong again at Sachsenring.”
